155 mm Gun Motor Carriage, M40


Description

The 155 mm Gun Motor Carriage, M40 was an improved version of the 155 mm Gun Motor Carriage, M12. It was equipped with a modern gun, and used the Medium Tank, M4 chassis. A total of 311 out of a planned 600 were completed before the end of the war.

The 155 mm gun could be replaced with an 8 inch howitzer, with the designation 8 in Howitzer Motor Carriage, M43. 48 of these vehicles were completed before the war. An ammunition carrier variant and a 250 mm mortar version were also planned, but production never started.
